ITALY Tomorrow!!!!!!! So exciting!

So, I finished all my work on time and everything.  Now I think I’m still in denial about Italy being tomorrow.  Last night I went to a lecture by an inter-port student (he joined us in Spain and will be leaving in Italy) who talked about what we should do and everything.  Afterwards I tried to talk to him a bit in Italian, but failed miserably, but he was nice enough to continue to try to.  He may meet up with us in Orvieto, but he is not sure.  Today was our big exam in Global Studies which everyone on the ship has to take.  It was kind of nice walking around and knowing that everyone was going through the same stress you are.  It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be though.  I woke up at 7, ate breakfast and took the exam from 7:30-8:45.

Now, for the real reason I’m posting…to let you all know what I am doing in port over the next few days!  Yay!  So excited for Italy!  Tomorrow morning we will once again wake up for the sunrise over Civitavecchia (sunrise is earlier this time, though…5:42am).  Tomorrow after we are able to leave the ship, I will be exploring Civitavecchia with a few people, and then once some of them leave, two of us will be traveling to Tarquinia, which is North of Civitavecchia (the Italian student recommended it).  Tomorrow night, is still open.  Thursday I am going to Rome from 8:30am – 6:30pm (still 6 hours ahead of home).  My only goal is to see the Sistine Chapel, other than that, I am still unsure.   Friday: 8:30am-5:30pm I will be in Orvieto.  Then, that night I will get back on the ship and go to Naples.  Saturday: 9:30-12:30pm I have a city orientation of Naples, Sunday: 8:30am-12:30pm I am going to the Herculaneum (similar to Pompeii, but a little more intact still.  I will try to post pictures on Friday night if I can, but if not I will try to before Croatia.

Something I realized tonight, is how weird it sounds when your teacher says things like “you’ll have an exam after Croatia”, or “your next paper, you should try and include some difference you saw between Italy and Egypt.”  Also, I heard that this morning a teacher missed his class because he fell asleep out on the deck.  Class here on the ship is really weird.  Anyway, I’m going to go watch a movie and fall asleep early.  I hope you all have a great couple days!  I hear it stopped raining a bit today, I hope it continues!

Charades is fun!

So, I don’t have too long, but I figure I should let you all know about the second half of my trip in Spain.  The trip from Spain to Italy is a tiring one because it is midterm time.  I have one midterm today, another tomorrow, and also two papers due tomorrow.  I have basically had no time to do anything other than eat, sleep and study.  Currently I’m sitting in the Union waiting for my first class to start (Global Studies).  Everyone gets here really early to get a good seat because it’s impossible to see the screen in the majority of the seats.  I normally get in the front row, but today people got here even earlier and I am stuck in the third row with someone really tall in front of me.  You don’t want to hear about all that though…here’s the interesting stuff.

So, after getting back from Arcos and Ronda, I was so tired, so instead of going out and doing something I went back to my room and just sat around talking with some people before passing out.  The next morning really early we ran to the train station (literally…we were late) and since I got my ticket that morning and the rest of the people I was with got theirs the night before, I ended up sitting in a different area of the train from them (they assign seats).  There were multiple Sevilla stops, so when we got to the first one I had to ask someone in a panicked voice if I was supposed to get off here.  Luckily someone nearby spoke a little English and told me it was the next stop that I wanted.  For most of the day we were “lost.”  I put that in quotes because we didn’t care that we were lost since the area was gorgeous and our only goal was to eventually go to the Cathedral (which is one of the largest in the world).  After stopping for some lunch (where we saw more SASers), we headed off in a more direct route to the Cathedral, however, by the time we got there, the gates were closing…It was beautiful from the outside, but I am very sad we didn’t get inside.  Instead we turned around and saw a large building that lots of people were going inside and decided to follow.  It took us a few minutes to figure out what we had just gone into, but turns out it was the Alcazar palace (and I believe it was also a convent). In the rooms the walls and ceilings were all covered in mosaics.  The gardens surrounding the palace were also some of the most beautiful I have ever seen.  We ended up spending a few hours in there (partially because towards the end we couldn’t figure out how to get out of the gardens) and then it was time to head back to the train.  We shopped along the way and I got a really pretty dress (which I posted a picture of me in it yesterday.  This time we found the train station really quickly and found that if we had gone directly to the cathedral, it was about a two minute walk.

The train ride home was maybe my favorite experience in Spain.  So, this time I was sitting in an entirely different car from my friends.  I sat down in what I thought was my seat (but they have letters for aisle and window seats, so I had to guess which one I was in.  I sat next to the window and sure enough…about a minute after I sit down a man comes over looking rather mad and speaking in Spanish.  I told him in Spanish that I did not speak Spanish and someone nearby told me that I was in his seat.  After she directed me to the seat next to the one I was in, I apologized to the man and he then smiled and all was well for the rest of the trip.  You’re probably all wondering why this trip was so great, but just give me a minute.  I fell asleep once, but dreamt about helado (Spanish ice cream) and I woke up with my mouth open and about to lick the air…I felt at this point it would be best if I stayed awake.  When the man next to me got off the train he smiled at me and said good bye.

Shortly after he left, though another slightly younger man came and sat down.  We sat in silence for a while, but when I saw a sign outside that said Cadiz, I panicked and asked him if that was Cadiz.  He explained to me (in hand motions) that Cadiz was three stops away and that I had nothing to worry about.  So, for the rest of the trip we talked about Cadiz, what I was doing here and where I was going next (he spoke no English).  It was a great game of charades!  Occasionally a girl sitting across the aisle from me would translate a word or two that he was saying (she apparently only spoke very little English).  Our conversation lasted about 30 minutes and I think we each got probably about 4 statements in (charades takes too long).  He got off the train and said goodbye, at which time the woman who had been translating words for me started to try and talk with me.  She ended up taking the seat he had been in and although she did not understand most of what I was saying, I had my journal on me with pictures of the ship as well as the countries we were visiting.  It made it much easier.  Explaining to the man that I lived on a boat was very difficult since I could not remember the word for boat (barca), but the journal helped for that too.  When she didn’t understand me for a while two men in front of me (who I did not recognize, but apparently are on the ship with me) translated a little.  It was all very interesting.  When we got off the train she smiled and said good bye (in English and I in Spanish).  When I got off the train I met up with my friends and they proceeded to tell me how awful their trip was on the train.  I was very happy that I was not sitting with them because otherwise I would not have had this conversation in hand gestures.

When we got back, we were all so tired that we took showers and Katelyn, another girl (Rachel) and I went out to dinner (Spanish style…which means at 11pm).  We ended up to a restaurant outside of the Cathedral that had tables outside.  It was absolutely incredible to be eating dinner and looking up at this massive building with the moon right behind it.  Since we were all so tired, we decided we’d walk to the water, then turn around and head back.  Sleep felt so good.

On the last day my plans changed so many times, but in the end I met up with Lauren (a girl from South Africa) and her friends and we went to the beach and relaxed and wrote postcards.  Then we went into town and shopped a little (I just window shopped) and eventually found a supermarket where I got some cookies and some tea to bring back to the ship.  We had my most delicious and most expensive meal in Spain for lunch.  It was 8 Euro for some incredible gazpacho with bacon and cheese in it and some home made chicken and ham croquets, also a bottle of water and flan was included, but I really hate flan, so I didn’t have any.  After Lunch we wandered back to the ship, sort of sullen, as this was our last time out and about in Spain.  We all got out computers and went out to free internet (which didn’t work well), then got back on the ship and said goodbye to land for three days.  That night I did a lot of home work, but stopped long enough to watch us leave port, then went back to it.

Yesterday we began classes as usual, but the day was odd because for most of the day we were attached to a big ship which was refueling in the straight of Gibraltar.  It was odd to see us surrounded by land and yet not be able to get off.  I did not get any pictures of it, although it was beautiful.  Also, I realized recently that they periodically will be posting pictures on the SAS website.  Currently they only have pictures of departure from Halifax (I’m in one, see if you can see me), but I’m sure they’ll post more at some point.  Here’s the site: http://www.semesteratsea.org/current-voyage/overview/watch-slideshows.php.

I also, realized I never told you guys about my “family.”  At the beginning of the voyage we all had the option of signing up to receive a family.  They are people that you can go to if you are having problems and occasionally you have family dinners.  My family, by chance, is one of my professors and her husband and son, as well as 11 other students.  We had our first dinner the night before Spain and then we had another last night.  We are going to meet for dinner to celebrate everyone’s birthday, quarter birthday or half birthday (depending on what you have when you are on the ship).  So, yesterday we had a big ice cream cake to celebrate our “mother’s” and “father’s” “birthdays”.  We will be meeting again the night we get back from Italy for my quarter birthday and 2 other people as well…yum, cake.

I hope the weather back home has been nice; Spain was gorgeous but so hot!  I know it will only get warmer.  I have not yet gotten a bad sunburn, but we have not gotten to Egypt yet.  I will post the night before Italy what I will be doing in Italy.  I’m not sure when I’ll have time to figure out what I am doing with my free time, but hopefully I will have some time in there somewhere.  Anyway, I should go off to study a bit.  Enjoy you’re day!

We went to dinner the night before we left at a restaurant right by the Cathedral of Cadiz.  This is me in front of our view at dinner in my new dress that I got in Sevilla.

Me standing next to one of the beautiful Mosaics along the walls in the Alcazar (a palace and convent in Sevilla)

Yum...that's all I have to say...this is in Sevilla

This is a picture in Arcos de la Frontera, which is a white town in Andalusia. This is looking out into the Valley.

I don't think there are any in this picture, but there are sunflower fields everywhere in this area.  It was an absolutely incredible drive to these whit towns.

So, here's the deal, I can only post one picture at a time, so this may be a little annoying and disjointed, but at least you can see some pictures.  I also have to make them small and of a lower quality.  This picture is the sunrise over Cadiz.

This is a test

So, apparently what I posted earlier didn't work, so I am trying something else.  If one person could just leave me a note at the bottom as to whether or not it worked, that would be awesome.  Anyway, this is a picture of us celebrating Stephanie's birthday at midnight on the upper deck.  It is Yufay (unsure of spelling), me, then Stephanie.  I hope this works.  Also, you should all probably know that we left Spain today.  I will try to post back about my last day soon, but I've been doing home work since we left port and need to go to sleep so I can wake up enough to take notes in Global Studies in the morning.  I hope you have a great night.  If this picture works I will try to send more soon, but we are in the midst of midterms right now and I have very little time before next port.  Hooray for Italy!  Civitavecchia first, then Naples.  Talk to you soon!

Hey, so I'm going to try really hard one more time to send pictures before I leave.  I do not have much time before I have to be back on the ship, so I will not really post anything new right now.  Here it goes…

I posted below news from Spain!

These are all in oposite order. It's being complicated and the internet here is really weak, so I'm going to post these then try to post more. If you don't see more soon, then I lost it. Enjoy these though!

look, real internet!

Hey guys, I’m in Spain! I’m having a fantastic time! Yesterday morning we woke up early and watched the sun rise over Cadiz. The first sight of land was really exciting. The sky was nearly clear and everyone was out on the front of the boat watching and celebrating.

Then at 9am I had my first trip off the boat. I was not the first to get injured! But sadly, someone twisted her ankle walking off the gang plank. Walking on land was really weird. We all felt like we were swaying. I went on a trip to the local University where we got a tour of the University and then listened to some women talk about same-sex marriages and women’s rights in Spain. It was really interesting, but I wanted to be out enjoying Spain for my first few hours on land. But once we got back to the boat I had my chance. I went on a 3 hour walking tour around Cadiz. We got to see everything and I got a really good handle on the city. It is really small and easy to find where you’re going. The people are friendly and it seems really safe. I got my first Helado (sp?). It was tasty.

After we came back to the ship and ate some dinner (to save money). While at dinner I met someone and me, her and a girl I had met the night before went wandering around the city. We had a destination, but we didn’t care when or how we got there, so we explored. We found the beautiful beach where one of the James Bond movies was filmed (pictures to follow). We went into a few shops though and didn’t buy anything. After heading to a bar where we got a delicious chocolate desert, we headed back to the ship for an early night.

Today I went on a trip to Arcos de la Frontera and then to Ronda. They are these beautiful small towns in Andalucia. The buildings are all white and everything seems so old. I met some cool people on the trip and it took just about all day. We walked everywhere! It was so gorgeous, thought that it was worth it. Tonight I might be going salsa dancing (or maybe not) and tomorrow morning we are taking a train to Sevilla for the day. I’m sure it will be fantastic. Pictures are coming up next!

I think the first line says it all...

Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, holy crap…I’m going to be in Spain in just a few hours!!

We’re waking up really early tomorrow to watch the sunrise over Spain (by early I mean 5:45).  It is going to be so gorgeous!  I will take tons of pictures.  The plan for tomorrow is in the morning I am going to go on a trip to learn about civil rights and same sex marriage in Spain.  Then in the afternoon I will be going on a city orientation tour of the churches and stuff.  When I get back to the ship I will meet up with some friends and go out to eat some delicious food!!  First stop: Churros con Chocolate!!!  Tomorrow night I’m not sure what I’m doing yet.  A bunch of people are going to a flamenco thing, but it was like $60 and I’m just going to go to the museum instead where they have demonstrations on Fridays.

Oh, more excitement (less exciting after that, but still good)!  We saw whales today!  The first group all you could see was the spouts, but after sitting outside reading for a while another group went by and you could see their dorsal fins!  No clue what kind they were.  The Oceanographer teacher didn’t know either.

Anyway, supper excited and really tired since my nap was cut short because the cleaning man had to clean my room (yes, they clean our rooms every day for us…it’s a little excessive).  So, I’m going to go to bed.  I’ll talk to you soon!!  I’ll try to post some pictures soon if I can find an internet café.

Good night.

Jumping, sun, cake and time change!

Shortly after posting that last one Stephanie, a girl who was studying in the same room as us, and I went outside to the upper deck to celebrate her birthday with cheers and small party horns.  Also, we attempted the jumping picture, but failed.  The pictures we got are pretty awesome though.  You can be sure that I will post them when I have that ability.  I went to bed last night feeling really good about the amount of work I had done since I was able to get a little ahead on some of my readings.

Today was beautiful.  It was really hot out (the first time all trip that it lasted more than 2 hours).  I spent most of my time outside on the deck reading.  While I was out there, though, it seemed I attracted all sorts of faculty and staff to my table.  The spiritual coordinator started off my interesting conversations.  A few professors sat down occasionally.  It was very interesting, but a bit odd.  I guess once you let one of them sit down, they all decide to.  Later on at class the teacher told us that the reading that she was going to have us do for tomorrow, she actually wasn’t going to have us do until after Spain and that the reading for after Spain was due tomorrow…which means that although I was ahead, it still meant that I wasn’t able to spend time hanging out tonight.  Things were, however made better with cake at dinner.  We ordered a cake for Stephanie which she was very happy about.  The cake wasn’t great, but it was just really nice to do something out of the ordinary for a time.

Shortly after dinner we went to another lecture by David Geiss on Spain.  This time, however it was on eating in Spain.  I am so excited for food!  Directly following I had to get right back to work, but Nietzsche was giving me a headache, so I decided to give up for tonight and I’ll just have to finish it tomorrow in between classes.

That’s all for tonight.  I’ll try to post tomorrow, but I probably won’t have time to post about Spain for a little while.  I have an exam the day after I get back on the ship and a paper and another exam a few days later.  Have a good night everyone!  Oh yeah, I thought I’d let you all know…we changed times again!  Yay!  One hour less of sleep again!  Good night.

The battles between school and "Oh my god!! We're at sea!!"

Excitement heightened today on board the Explorer when students not only realized that there was only two days until port, but also that we would not have to push the clocks forward again tonight!  This means some of us may actually get a normal amount of sleep.  Classes have now completely taken over our lives on board.  I wasn’t expecting that my day would only consist of reading, classes, eating and sleeping.  I wish I were exaggerating.  I am learning interesting things, but this is a ridiculous amount to be shoving into such a short time.  Students are starting to realize that the only way to have any sort of social life onboard is to slack in at least one class.  Last night a few of us did slack and watched Cars and hung out discussing what trips we were going to take in Spain.  My first exam is the day before we get to Italy and my second is the day after we leave Italy.  Looks like I’ll continue to be busy.

Tonight onboard there was a dance, but most people were busy studying.  I felt sad at first that I wasn’t able to go, but felt better when I walked down the hallway in search of brownies which were said to be in the dance room.  The halls were filled with people, not partying, but reading.  Everyone is so desperate to not have work to do while in port that we are all rushing to get it done now.  This, along with the pile of brownies and double chocolate cookies that I brought back with me made me feel much more comfortable.  I know that once we get to Spain I will be thankful that I did all of my work before, but right now it’s a bit of a drag.

And the time changes have not helped.  Losing an hour every day has been rough.  Sadly, that time has been taken out of sleeping, rather than out of elsewhere.  Also, the rocking of the ship seems to be sort of calming and most have agreed that it makes us even sleepier.  We are all rocked to bed every night.  My plan for tonight is to get a bit more work done and then head to bed by 12.  Hopefully I will be able to do something fun tomorrow evening.  I’m going to try and relax and watch a movie tomorrow night.

This post may have made it sound like I am having a terrible time, but in fact, the reading has not been bad reading.  Also, the classes have been interesting enough to make me want to do the reading.  We tend to take long meal breaks just to talk and have fun.  Tomorrow is Stephanie’s birthday (someone I’ve been hanging out with a lot), so we ordered a cake to be brought to her at dinner tomorrow night.  Also, once we get to warmer areas, we will actually be able to hang out on the deck and maybe go swimming a little.  I am also hoping that I will start to manage my time a little better soon.

Tonight at dinner we talked to our resident Spain expert and asked him about his thoughts on us trying to go to Portugal and he said that it probably wasn’t the best use of our time since by the time we got there, there wouldn’t be much time to do anything.  We have decided instead to head up to Seville possibly.  You should totally look him up on the web, though.  His name is David Geiss (not sure on the spelling).  He’s done some pretty incredible things, including being knighted.  He’s also just a generally cool guy.  I really like how approachable the professors and everyone is on the ship (it’s not a boat…they keep reminding us).  They’ll come and sit with you at dinner and hold you up to talk when you’re in the bathroom.  They all seem genuinely interested in our lives.

Lastly…turns out that they are going to be performing the Vagina Monologues on the ship on the way back…and, being me I signed up.  And here I thought I was never going to be in them again.  I am going to see if I can do the one I did this last year, since I still have it memorized.  Rachel Levy would probably think I was entirely insane for doing this, but if she were in my situation, she would too.

Anyway, I’m going to go get some reading done and then possibly sit out on the deck for a bit before heading to bed.  Have a great night!

Only two days!!!

Exciting Day!

This was possibly one of the most exciting days at sea, but you’ll have to wait for that one until I talk about yesterday.

Yesterday the seas were rough again, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as the last rough day.  We got to spend a little bit of time outside before it got too bad, but mostly it was just grose.  Classes were interesting though.  I spent most of the night studying and reading, trying once again to catch up.  I am now done catching up, but there is so much reading!

So, for today.  The most exciting thing happened since two days ago when we saw a boat off in the distance!  At dinner tonight someone yelled that there were dolphins outside, so everyone jumped up and ran outside to watch.  It was so beautiful.  I did get a picture of one of them.  It was funny having everyone leave the dining room to run outside to watch.  The deck was full of people.  There was also a really cool looking ship off in the distance which looked like a huge old maritime trade ship.  I doubt that it was, but it was really cool.  I got a picture of that too, so I will share them when I get back.  On my way past the library I looked out the window and spotted LAND!  Turns out that the captain had changed our route so that we would be going between two islands.  This was the captain’s notes from today for those of you who have a map in front of you and you can check to see what islands they are:

At noon today the Explorer’s position was…

Latitude: 40 degrees, 12 minutes North

Longitude: 033 degrees, 56 minutes West

Distance Made Good:     1399 Nautical miles

(Since Halifax)

Distance Made Good: 345 Nautical miles

(Since Noon)

Distance to go to the next Port:   1332 Nautical miles

(Cadiz)

Average Speed:  15 Knots

Currently a bunch of us are taking a break tonight from studying and watching Cars (which is today’s movie) and talking about what independent trips we are going to do.  I’ll let you know sometime what we are planning on.  I should go to bed now because we have to move the clock forward again tonight which means it is now 12 am.  Good night.  I hope to post more at some point in the future.  Enjoy!

First day of classes

This is going to be really short as it is late and I have class early tomorrow.  My first day of classes today was good.  I think the hardest class will be global studies.  The professor is really interesting and energetic, but he talks waaaay too fast and it's impossible to write down everything he says.  My other two classes seem really interesting.  I'm especially excited about my Faith and Doubt class.  It seems the professor knows a lot and is really willing to experience it all with us and not push anything onto anyone (which I wouldn't expect she would, but it's always nice to know).  The seas are much better today.  We can't hear the bow slapping against the waves in our room.  Apparently the seas yesterday and last night were abnormally rough.  The captain called them "moderate" waves.  They said that one crew member who has been on the seas for 17 years and had never gotten sick, was sick all day yesterday.  It was good to know that we were all not alone in feeling dizzy and nauseated.  I find I only get dizzy and disoriented when I'm dehydrated, so I've started carying a water bottle around ship with me.  However, last night was interesting.  My rommate and I were kept up late by drawers that kept opening and slamming shut and then things would fly accross the room.  It was all very exciting.  Today was beautiful today, though!  We sat out on the deck for dinner and read a little after class.  We wanted to stay and watch the sun set, but there was a seminar on how to survive SAS and how to travel safely in ports.  I have started hanging out a lot with one group of people, but I still really enjoy that it has not gotten weird yet to walk up to some random person and ask if you can sit with them during a meal.  I hope that doesn't stop.  The reason this is so short tonight is because I found out today in class that we were supposed to have already read the syllabus (which was available online) and have read some.  I wouldn't have been able to read the first two days even if I had wanted, so I was busy tonight trying to catch up.  Also, right now every night we are losing an hour.  We have already lost two hours.  It is 1am here right now which I believe would mean it is 10pm there.  Tomorrow at this time it will be 2am.  They really are pushing us to get into the right time zones.

Anyway, I'm having a great time and I can't wait to get to port.  A few of us are planning a bunch of things to do on our own.  I have two days free in port and so does one other girl, so we're going to get together and explore a bit.  Enjoy your night!  Feel free to email me sometime!

Note: front of the ship=dizzy

Hey everyone.  Yesterday I began my journey!  My mom came to see me off, but sadly couldn’t really see me because of how far away she was since security is so high right now.  Just like most important things in my life, there were bag pipes.  They stood on the docks and played songs that I have heard thousands of times and don’t know the names (except Scotland the Brave).  My room is small, as I suspected, but my roommate seems nice.  We haven’t really spent much time together.  I doubt I’ll spend much time in there anyways.  Sat out on the deck yesterday for a while talking to people and am already sure that I will be able to find a niche here on the ship.  The librarian on the ship works at my college (Jim Huff) and so far has been a great friendly face.

I have not gotten sick yet, but the waves do make certain things difficult.  Like walking in a straight line, trying not to run into people or poles, showering, and putting on pants while standing up.  When sitting out on the deck you don’t realize that the boat is rocking so much, but once you go inside, it’s so weird.  I have run into multiple poles and not any people yet…but give it time.  Sleeping last night was a bit weird since we were in a rougher patch at the beginning of our sleep.  My roommate and I stayed up late (not on purpose) occasionally saying “whoa!” due to the rocking.

Today we had to talk about the book that everyone on the boat was supposed to read.  My group leader seems very nice.  He is the poetry professor onboard and looks like he dropped right out of the late 70s.  We had a meeting this morning in the union before heading off to our designated groups.  The union happens to be in the front of the boat and therefore the bumpiest.  Today the seas are rough, so when we were all standing up, the bow came out of the water and slapped against the waves making everyone scream and sit back down or grab onto something.  My group meeting was on the deck above which meant it was just as bumpy.  Many are feeling ill, so we ended it early.  I did, however realize that my room is really near the front which is why it is so difficult to walk in our room.

It is beautiful though.  Last night I sat with some people at dinner and we watched as we slowly could no longer see land.  This morning I sat by a window during breakfast and watched the rough seas go by underneath.  It’s too cold outside to spend much time out there, but we are assured that it will get warm soon.

I’m going to go try to take a nap before we have another meeting.  I hope you all are enjoying life on land.  The sea is a bit dizzying and makes an intellectual conversation difficult.  I miss you all!  I hope to post back again soon.  Bye.

We set sail tomorrow!

Having a great time in Halifax! We ship off tomorrow morning. Today was awesome. Mom and I wandered around and got to see the boat from a distance and we took a frog tour (much like a duck tour, but on the side there is a picture of a frog instead of a duck). Halifax is a nice little city. I would love to come back sometime to explore more. Tonight was pretty incredible. A bunch of us SASers met up at a restaurant called the Argyle. It was really nice, but we were there for an hour and they didn't take our orders at our table, so a few of us decided to leave and we found a small pizza shop up the road. Saved some money at least! After that we went to a bar nearby and hung out there. Later on we went to a club which had opened itself after hearing how many of us would come in if they opened it. So, it was full of SASers. It was so much fun! I met a lot of people and had a blast. Got tired a little early though, so now I'm back in the room. This is my last post off ship, so I thought I'd give you some pictures to mull over. My mom went on the ship for a parent's reception and took some pictures for all of you. Also, I have included some pictures from our explores around the city. I hope you enjoy! They are in no order...kind of randomly placed.

Not sure, looks like some sort of eatery.

Who watched this cartoon? Apparently the cartoon was based out of Halifax, so when it was canceled someone made a replica and now takes people out on tours!

Isn't it awesome!

The first glimps of the ship. This is all you can see of it.
I'm so excited! I sail tomorrow! No idea when the next post will be. Especially the next one with pictures. If I can find wireless or an internet cafe in Spain, I will be sure to post pictures, but until then...just text! I hope you enjoy these!

I like Canada!

After a long trip, starting at 9 this morning, I am finally in Halifax and settling into the hotel. Halifax is awesome. Here is why:

1. The men who work at the airport wear kilts

2. The people who work at the airport are very friendly

3. My bags arrived with me

4. According to a man in a kilt, Halifax is very similar to Vermont

5. In the airport there are tons of recycling bins

6. In the hotel there is a tiny recycling bin (it is adorable)

7. They have a constant supply of cookies for free in the lobby of this hotel (they are tasty)

8. The seafood chowder was incredible

9. They had sweet potato fries in the restaurant

10. In the room they have a very comfortable chair that has its own brochure about how comfortable it is

11. There is a tiny thing of mouthwash in the bathroom

12. This Internet is free

As you can see, I have not seen much of Halifax yet. Mom and I will be going out tomorrow to explore a bit. Tomorrow night is a dinner with some of the people who I will be sailing with. I met a few of them in the airport earlier and they seemed nice enough. One of them hadn't gotten her bags yet. I really hope she gets them...that would really suck. Not much else to post about. I may post tomorrow if the next hotel has free Internet as well. If not, I won't until I get on the boat. Enjoy your evening!

The countdown is now in hours!

There are only hours to go before I leave! Tomorrow morning at around 9:20am my mom and I (piloted by my aunt) will drive to Lebanon, NH where we will take a bus to Boston, then we will wait for around 4 hours to get on our flight to Halifax...complicated, huh? Tuesday we set off on our journey to lands unknown...well, known, but unknown sounds more exciting. Monday night while my mom is at a parents-only dinner on the boat, I will be going out to dinner with a bunch of people who will be going on the trip with me.

As of right now I am just about done packing after shifting weight around in my bags for the last two days now both of my checked bags are exactly 50 pounds according to our scale. There is even some room in both bags . I am good.

Also, I know that a lot of you really want to see what the boat will be like and since I will not be able to post pictures on here very often, here is a video tour of the boat that someone did on the Fall 2006 voyage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hq6CdIj2Ak. It will at least give you an idea of what it will be like.

So Excited!!!

11 Days Left!!!

I wanted to test to see if this would all work before I left. I am getting so excited to leave. Only 11 days before I fly to Halifax and only 13 days until I ship off. I have started packing a little. Mainly I have taken over Nano's room and have been throwing everything I find that I need to pack onto the bed. Nothing all that exciting is going on right now, so I think I'll end it at that. I hope you all enjoy reading my blog while I'm gone! I promise they will get more exciting than this.
